Our environmental contribution

Fewer empty seats. Smarter journeys.

Every day, millions of car journeys are made with empty seats. KinderMiles helps people already travelling in the same direction connect, share the journey, and make better use of the cars already on the road.

  • Share trips already planned
  • Fair cost contributions
  • Honest, estimated claims

Our mission

KinderMiles is not about encouraging people to drive more. It is about helping people share journeys that are already planned.

Help reduce unnecessary individual car journeys by making shared travel easier, more practical and more social.

How KinderMiles can help

Three trips, one car

If three people are all travelling from London to Birmingham separately, that could mean three cars making almost the same journey. If two of those people join the third person's existing trip, fewer vehicles may be needed for the same movement of people.

That can help reduce:

  • Unnecessary vehicle journeys
  • Fuel consumption
  • Road congestion
  • Demand for parking
  • Associated carbon emissions

The environmental benefit depends on the specific journey, vehicle type, number of passengers, route and what those passengers would otherwise have done. For that reason, we avoid making exaggerated claims — our goal is to encourage more efficient use of existing journeys.

Filling the empty seats

Most cars leave with room to spare

A car may have four or five seats, but many journeys are made with only one person inside. KinderMiles helps drivers offer those spare seats to people travelling the same way.

The more people who share journeys that would otherwise have been made separately, the more efficiently existing vehicles can be used.

Sharing everyday journeys

Our mission goes beyond events

KinderMiles can help people share all kinds of trips:

City-to-city trips

Daily & regular commutes

Airport journeys

University journeys

Concerts & festivals

Football matches

Weddings & social events

Weekend & holiday travel

A shared journey does not need to be unusual. Sometimes the biggest opportunity is simply helping two people who travel the same route every week discover each other.

Where it matters most

Congestion, events and commuting

Helping reduce congestion

More cars on the road can contribute to congestion, slower journeys and greater fuel consumption. By helping people combine similar journeys, KinderMiles may help reduce the number of separate vehicles needed for some trips — particularly around:

Large eventsStadiumsCity centresWorkplacesAirportsUniversitiesMajor commuter routes

If more people arrive together, there may also be less pressure on parking.

Events are a natural opportunity

Large events can result in thousands of people travelling to the same place at roughly the same time. Many may come from the same towns or cities — KinderMiles helps event attendees find others already travelling their way.

Example

Four football supporters from South London are travelling to the same match in Manchester.

Rather than all four driving separately, KinderMiles can help them discover an existing shared journey. The same principle applies to concerts, festivals, weddings, conferences and community events.

Smarter commuting

Regular commuting is another major opportunity. Someone may drive:

Example

Croydon → Central London, three days every week, with several empty seats.

Another employee nearby may make almost the same journey independently. KinderMiles can help people discover compatible recurring journeys and travel together where appropriate. For organisations using KinderMiles for Work, this can also support company car-sharing programmes and more efficient employee travel.

Pricing that supports sharing

Fair cost contributions, not surge pricing

Private drivers should be sharing a journey they already intend to make — passengers contribute towards the cost of that journey rather than paying the driver to operate like an on-demand taxi.

Sharing existing journeys instead of creating additional ones for profit.

  • Passengers contribute to real costs
  • No surge pricing

Estimating environmental impact

Measuring what sharing achieves

As KinderMiles grows, we intend to provide users and organisations with estimates of the environmental impact of shared journeys.

Possible metrics may include

  • 1Shared passenger journeys
  • 2Estimated individual vehicle trips avoided
  • 3Estimated miles shared
  • 4Estimated fuel saved
  • 5Estimated CO₂ emissions potentially avoided

These figures will be estimates rather than exact measurements — calculated using factors such as journey distance, vehicle type, number of passengers, estimated alternative travel behaviour, and recognised emissions factors. Where we publish environmental estimates, we will explain the methodology used.

Estimated CO₂ saving

A passenger who joins an existing ride rather than driving separately can be just as important as the person offering the spare seat.

KinderMiles for Work

Companies using KinderMiles may also be able to see aggregated sustainability information, such as:

  • Employee shared journeys
  • Estimated vehicle trips avoided
  • Shared commuting miles
  • Estimated CO₂ reductions

Employee privacy should remain protected, so company reporting should focus on aggregated information rather than detailed personal journey tracking.

Technology alone is not enough

We recognise that ride-sharing is only one part of making transport more sustainable. Walking, cycling and public transport may often be the lower-emission option. KinderMiles is most useful where people are already choosing to travel by car — our role is to help make those car journeys more efficient by reducing empty seats where possible.

We do not claim that every KinderMiles journey is environmentally better than every alternative.

What guides us

Our environmental principles

01

Share journeys already happening

Our platform should encourage drivers to offer spare seats on trips they already plan to make.

02

Avoid unnecessary driving

KinderMiles should not incentivise ordinary drivers to create extra trips purely to earn money.

03

Encourage efficient matching

Route matching should minimise unnecessary detours wherever possible.

04

Be honest about environmental claims

We will describe calculated emissions savings as estimates and explain how they are calculated.

05

Keep improving

As the platform grows, we will explore ways to make ride-sharing easier and more environmentally efficient.

One journey. More people.

“If people are already travelling to the same place, they should have an easy way to travel together.”

By filling empty seats, sharing costs and connecting people going the same way, KinderMiles aims to help make everyday car travel more efficient.

Fewer empty seats. Smarter journeys.
